Our second stop yesterday was another part of the Caesarea Maritime port - a
crusader castle compete with a drawbridge, gate and dry moat (apparently what we know as Malaria was a problem so they opted to not have water in the moat). We walked through the walls and gates where the defenders ambushed a trackers with burning oil and arrows. Kind of strange thinking I stood and touched the same walls as King Richard the Lionheart.
The amazing thing is the layers of archeological history from Romans to Christians to Muslims back to Christians and so on...
The Apostle Paul was imprisoned here for two years at this port city (Acts 23-26) and where he baptized the centurion Cornelius - the first Gentile baptism (Acts 10). The port here is where Paul left for his many trips and missions. He was later sent to Rome and martyred.
