Nazareth

DAY 2: STOP 2

Things started to get really exciting when we hit Nazareth - about 5 miles from our hotel in Tiberius.  Nazareth is a busy city of about 60,000.  The focus of our visit was the  Basilica of the Annunciation, which is a church built over the remains of Byzantine and Crusader churches. It incorporates the cave in which the Virgin Mary received the news from Gabriel that she would give birth to Jesus.

We saw the grotto/cave that housed the well where The Annunciation occurred.  THIS WAS THE FIRST PLACE I REALLY HAD TROUBLE LEAVING (Annunciation Site below)

Next to the basilica is The St. Joseph which is built over the home and workshop of the Holy family. Later  tradition identify this place as the house of Joseph and the Holy family.  By the way, new translations suggest Joseph was stone mason by trade and not a carpenter.  Go figure!
